The incidence of breast cancer has been increasing and breast cancer is now the third major cause of cancer for women in korean Society. Many women visit the hospital with a fear of breast cancer of she found any abnormality in her breast and the
most
common breast abnormality is breast mass. So to understand the clinical significance of breast mass, we analysed 1527 cases with any breast symptom sho have visited the Department of Surgery, Guro Hospital, Korea University from June, 1989 to
May,
1993
The results were obtained as follows.
Among the 1527 cases of abnormal breast symptoms, 1044 (68.4%) cases were breast mass and 937 (93.2%) cases were premenopause among the 1044 cases. The most common age grou was fourth decade (46.2%) among the breast mass group. The incidence of
cancer
was 25.1% (67 267) in operated cases and 6.4% (67/1044) among the breast mass. In the 1044 patients with breast masses, the common age group were fourth decade (49.4%), fourth decade (56.4%) in fibroademona, and fourth decade (35.2%), fifth
decade
(32.4%) in breast cancer.
The 267 cases (25.6%) were operated among the 1044 breast mass and the cancer indicence was 25.1% among the operated cases. In the 1044 cases with breast masses, the operation rate and cancer incidence in operatied cases were follows, mass only
(31.4%,
20.9%), mass and breast pain (21.4%, 26.8%), and mass, breast pain and abnormal nipple discharge (26.2%, 37.5%) mass and abnormal nipple discharge (25.6%, 25.1%). We briefly summarize the results, the most common breast symptom was breast mass,
the
most
common age was fourth decade, and the cancer in cidence was 25.1% in operated breast mass patients, so we recommand more aggressive diagnostic approaches and surgical therapy in the women with breast mass or mass related symptoms more than 30
years
old.
